Day 7
The rain never really stopped today but the wind was the problem. It was so strong that I could not rush down hills because the bike wobbled so much. I met two canoeists about to make a descent on the swollen river Rawthey; Kara and Alison. We chatted while they got ready and I took some pictures - hope they got down the 7 miles ok - perhaps they will leave a message on this blog.
I stopped at a temperance inn for lunch and had sarsaparilla and steak pie and chips whilst looking out over the Howgill Fells and a huge waterfall in the distance. The proprietor pointed out a red squirrel in the garden. Their website is named after the waterfall www.cautleyspout.co.uk. Over the fells to Stephen Kirkby (don't pronounce the second k) and made my way up the hill to the YHA hostel near Appleby where I have met a cyclist doing John O'Groats to Land's End. He has been really helpful in advising me on my route North and even given me some of his map copies that he had finished with.
And so to bed.
